14-14-14 fertilizer is a balanced grade that supplies equal nitrogen, phosphate, and potash. Most bags on US shelves carry a slow release coating. That changes how much you apply, how often, and which crops actually gain from it.

14-14-14 fertilizer supplies 14% nitrogen, 14% phosphate, and 14% potash by weight. Most US products carry a resin coating and feed for three to four months. Soil temperature, not watering, controls the release rate.

14-14-14 fertilizer works best on annual vegetables, bedding plants, perennials, container crops, and young ornamental trees and shrubs. It suits ground where a soil test shows all three nutrients sitting low or moderate. That situation is common in new beds, sandy ground, and fresh potting mix.

How Does 14-14-14 Slow Release Fertilizer Work?

A 14-14-14 slow release fertilizer holds soluble nutrients inside a semi-permeable shell, then meters them out as soil warms. Soil moisture soaks through the coating and dissolves the core. Osmotic pressure then pushes that solution back out through tiny pores.

Ohio State University Extension explains the mechanics clearly. Coating thickness and temperature set the release speed. Once the core empties, the shell breaks down in the soil.

The Osmocote slow release coating uses an alkyd resin derived from linseed oil. ICL, the manufacturer, states that pH, salinity, microbial activity, and rainfall do not change the release rate. Only temperature does.

That single fact matters more than anything else on the bag. Cool spring soil stretches the feeding window. Hot July soil burns through it fast.

The derived-from line names polymer-coated ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphate, calcium phosphate, and potassium sulfate. That tells you two useful things. Nitrogen comes in both nitrate and ammonium form, so plants get an immediate-use source and a slower one. Potassium sulfate also brings sulfur along, which many Great Plains soils need.

The label rate reads 1 scoop (about 3 tablespoons) per 4 square feet. That equals 1 pound per 40 square feet. Mix it into the top 1 to 3 inches of soil. Scotts also states the product will not burn plants even at three times that rate.

Professional bags print a lighter landscape rate, often near 7 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Both numbers are correct. They target different jobs, so match the rate to the planting rather than the brand.

How Much 14-14-14 Fertilizer Do You Need?

Divide the pounds of nitrogen you want by 0.14. That gives you pounds of product. Iowa State University Extension teaches this same method for any grade.

  1. Goal: 1 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. 1 ÷ 0.14 = 7.1 lb of 14-14-14 per 1,000 sq ft.
  2. Goal: 2 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. 2 ÷ 0.14 = 14.3 lb of product.
  3. A 4 ft x 8 ft raised bed (32 sq ft) at 1 lb N per 1,000 sq ft. 7.1 × (32 ÷ 1,000) = 0.23 lb, or roughly 3.6 ounces.

Utah State University Extension suggests 2 to 4 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. That range covers a vegetable garden with no soil test on file. The consumer Osmocote rate of 1 pound per 40 square feet equals 25 pounds per 1,000 square feet. That delivers 3.5 pounds of nitrogen. That sits at the top of the range, so treat it as a full-season budget rather than a monthly feeding.

How to Apply 14-14-14 Fertilizer

Work coated granules into the root zone before planting, then water them in. Surface granules on bare, dry ground release poorly and wash off in a hard rain.

  2. Broadcast it evenly across the soil surface.

How Do You Dilute 14-14-14 Fertilizer in Water?

You do not dilute coated 14-14-14 fertilizer in water. The resin shell exists to stop the nutrients from dissolving all at once. Soaking the prills defeats the design and gives you an unmeasurable, unbalanced solution.

The manufacturer says so directly. Scotts positions Osmocote and similar controlled release products for soil and growing media, not for hydroponics or liquid feeding.

If you want liquid feeding, buy a water-soluble grade instead. UF/IFAS extension guidance for home gardens suggests about 2 tablespoons per gallon of water. Then pour roughly 1 cup of that solution around each transplant. A soluble 20-20-20 balanced blend handles that job properly.

Uncoated 14-14-14 blends do exist, mostly in agricultural bulk. Those still dissolve unevenly, since granular blends separate into different particles. Stick with a product labeled for solution use.
